Google Play has opened a $1 million equity-free fund aimed at independent game studios across 32 African countries, offering capital and mentorship to developers who have historically struggled to attract investment. The programme signals continued interest from a major European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) technology division in the continent's creative economy, potentially strengthening ties between African studios and global distribution networks.
What the fund offers
The Indie Games Fund will select 10 studios, each receiving between $50,000 and $200,000 in non-dilutive capital, meaning Google takes no equity stake. Beyond funding, the selected teams will get technical support to refine their games and improve visibility on the Google Play store, along with mentorship from industry specialists.
