The Federal Court of Australia has ruled that Apple must permit third-party app stores on the iPhone, a decision that follows a finding that the company violated local competition law. As a result, Epic Games' Fortnite is set to return to iOS in Australia, according to reporting by GamesIndustry.biz and Engadget.
The dispute traces back to Epic Games' efforts to use an alternative payment system for Fortnite on Apple devices. In late 2021, a US judge ruled that Apple should allow alternative in-app payment methods, and a parallel case proceeded in Australia.
According to GSMArena, Epic secured an initial win in Australia last year when a court found that both Apple and Google had breached local competition laws. Both companies had removed Fortnite from their respective app stores during the conflict.
