Blu Label, the South African digital distribution group known for airtime, vouchers and payments, is moving into the electricity market after restructuring its telecoms interests tied to Cell C.
According to ITWeb, the company says the Cell C write downs are now behind it, leaving what it describes as a clean balance sheet and room for growth plans. Blu Label remains Cell C's largest shareholder, holding 49.53% of the mobile operator.
TechCabal reports that the group is positioning its energy unit, Blu Energy, across the electricity value chain, spanning power trading and wheeling, renewable generation, battery storage and municipal billing. In February 2026, Blu Label was granted a multi-year electricity trading licence by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). The company says it has identified around 400MW of potential capacity and plans to deploy up to 180MW in the near term.
