Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, after more than 30 years, according to GamesIndustry.biz. Early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending.
The shutdown is part of a broader restructuring. TechPowerUp, citing an internal memo from executives David Tinson and Cam Weber reported by Bloomberg, said EA is laying off about 400 people, roughly 3% of its workforce. Around 50 of those roles were connected to the cancelled new Mass Effect game.
The Sims is also affected. EA is pausing a project codenamed Project Lotus and shifting resources to another called Project Evergreen, though several reports describe Lotus as cancelled outright. Full Circle, the studio behind skate., is being reduced to what the memo calls a smaller, more focused team. EA says the game has performed well since entering early access in September 2025, and the same team had already faced layoffs earlier in the year.
