Philips has moved to replace smart lighting hubs that stopped working following a problematic software update, according to reporting by Engadget. The company said it is offering affected customers free replacement units and is distributing a newer update intended to stop the problem from recurring.
What Happened
According to Engadget, a software update rendered certain smart lighting hubs inoperable, a state commonly described in the connected-devices industry as being "bricked." When a hub is bricked, it can no longer function as intended, which for a smart lighting system can mean the loss of central control over connected lights and related features.
In response, Philips said it would supply free replacements to customers whose devices were affected. The company also indicated that a subsequent update is being rolled out that should prevent the issue from happening again, per Engadget's report. The available source material does not specify the exact number of units affected, the geographic distribution of impacted customers, or the timeline for delivering replacements.
