A mobile app built by a Zimbabwean developer to calculate lobola, the traditional bride price negotiated between families in many Southern African cultures, has drawn a user base that stretches well beyond the continent, according to TechCabal. The tool has attracted downloads across Southern Africa and Europe, and was featured on national television in Japan.
The reach of the app illustrates a growing point of interest for the Africa↔Europe technology corridor: software grounded in specifically African cultural practices is finding audiences abroad, including among diaspora communities and curious international users.
