AI Coding Boom Fuels Funding for Code Review and Validation Startups

Blacksmith, a San Francisco-based provider of cloud infrastructure for validating software code, raised $45 million in Series B funding at a $550 million valuation. Peak XV Partners led the round, with participation from existing investors Y Combinator and GV, bringing the company's total funding to $58.5 million. Its platform helps engineering teams build, test and verify changes before production, with customers including Supabase, Clerk, Ashby and Mercury. Blacksmith plans to direct most of the new capital into computing infrastructure and to expand its engineering team across New York and San Francisco. The company currently manages hundreds of thousands of computing cores. According to Ventureburn, Blacksmith co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash said validation has become a growing bottleneck as coding agents drive teams to produce several times more pull requests.

Separately, Mindgard, a Boston and London-based AI security startup spun out of Lancaster University, closed a €26 million ($30 million) Series A round to expand across product, engineering, sales and marketing. The round was led by Album VC, with participation from Karma Ventures and existing investors .406 Ventures, Atlantic Bridge, IQ Capital and Lakestar. Founded in 2022 by Dr. Peter Garraghan, Mindgard helps organisations discover, assess and defend their AI systems. EU-Startups reported that CEO James Brear said AI is creating a new attack surface that requires a fundamentally different approach to securing it.

Apple has outlined Reference Image, a camera feature that cryptographically signs pixel data at capture. Developers have questioned what the approach actually proves.
