Apple Details Reference Image, an iPhone 18 Pro Mode That Signs Photos at the Sensor
Apple has outlined Reference Image, a camera feature that cryptographically signs pixel data at capture. Developers have questioned what the approach actually proves.

Apple has published the design of Reference Image, a camera mode for the iPhone 18 Pro that signs pixel data at the sensor and processes it in Private Cloud Compute under an Apple signature, according to InfoQ.
The approach is intended to establish the provenance of photographs at the point of capture. InfoQ reported that the design moves provenance trust away from C2PA, the content credentials standard commonly used to track the origin and editing history of media.
According to InfoQ, developers on Hacker News and Reddit have challenged what the feature actually demonstrates. Points raised included the possibility of photographing a screen to capture existing imagery, the fact that the anonymity guarantee depends on Apple's cloud infrastructure, and whether identity verification is an appropriate use case for the technology.
