European sports businesses that fall outside the category of headline rights holders are emerging as a focus for investors seeking longer-term returns. In an interview published by SportsPro, Danny Menken, co-founder of Athvance Capital, set out the firm's thesis for where it believes the next wave of value in the sports sector will be created.
Looking Beyond Elite Rights
According to SportsPro, Menken argued that the most significant opportunities are not concentrated in sport's best-known and most expensive assets — often described as trophy assets, such as top-tier leagues and marquee rights holders. Instead, the firm is directing its attention toward businesses that operate across the wider sports ecosystem. This operator-led approach positions the companies that build and run services, technology and infrastructure across sport as the primary targets, rather than the premium rights that typically attract the largest valuations.
