The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a virtual private network (VPN) service and individuals linked to ransomware activity, in a move that underscores how enforcement action increasingly targets the infrastructure and enabling services behind cyberattacks rather than only the attackers themselves.
What the Treasury Announced
According to BleepingComputer, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated two individuals and one entity for enabling ransomware attacks against organizations in the United States. The Record from Recorded Future News reported that the sanctioned entity is First VPN Service, also referred to as 1VPNS, a VPN provider described as favored by ransomware groups.
The Record further reported that the service's administrator, identified as a Ukrainian national, was sanctioned for aiding ransomware groups. In a separate action, the outlet said a Belarusian man was sanctioned in connection with malware tools known as "cryptors," software typically used to help disguise malicious code so it can evade detection by security systems.
