Certain Energy, a British long-duration energy storage company, has raised £10 million (around €11.6 million) in a Series A round to commercialise its manganese flow battery technology and prepare it for grid-scale deployment.
The round was led by the British Business Bank, which contributed £3.5 million (about €4 million), according to EU-Startups. Additional backers included Centrica, Ceres Power Holdings and Temasek Trust's Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health (C3H).
Founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Imperial College London and previously known as RFC Power, Certain Energy develops long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems that hold renewable electricity and release it when wind and solar output falls. The company says the technology can help stabilise grids, cut renewable energy curtailment and reduce reliance on gas-fired peaker plants.
