Denuvo Sues Anonymous Cracker 'voices38' Over Alleged DRM Circumvention

Anti-Tamper and digital rights management developer Denuvo has filed a lawsuit against an anonymous game cracker known as "voices38," accusing the individual of bypassing its protection technology in at least 26 PC titles. The complaint was filed on September 14 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, according to TorrentFreak, which first reported the case.

Denuvo is seeking monetary damages along with a court order barring further circumvention of its DRM, including protections on games that have not yet been released. The complaint describes the defendant as an unknown individual or entity focused on reverse engineering and cracking games that use Denuvo's Anti-Tamper product.

Because Denuvo does not own the copyrights to any of the listed games, the case is not framed as copyright infringement. Instead, it relies on the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prohibit bypassing digital locks that control access to copyrighted works, as well as distributing tools or instructions that help others do so.
