
ECB Official Urges Digital Euro to Guard Europe's Monetary Sovereignty

The European Central Bank should move forward with a digital euro to avoid fragmentation in the region's payment systems and to keep central bank money relevant as finance becomes more digital, according to ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone.
Speaking on Tuesday, Cipollone argued that Europe could grow too reliant on payment infrastructure controlled from outside the region, a situation he said could weaken its monetary sovereignty unless a pan-European digital payment option is made available, as reported by BitKE. He also cautioned that tokenised finance might evolve across closed, incompatible platforms, which could undermine the "singleness" of money.
