Figure, a US-based robotics company, has disposed of its older F.02 humanoid robots by having them drop into a 75-ton furnace filled with molten steel, according to reporting from Tom's Hardware and Electrek.
The company said keeping its F.02 fleet in service no longer made sense as production of its next-generation F.03 ramps up. Disassembling the older units was described as difficult and time-consuming. Because the robots contain a significant amount of proprietary technology, Figure could not hand them to a third party, and tasking an internal team with the work would have pulled staff away from other efforts, including the F.04 model currently in development.
According to Tom's Hardware, chief executive Brett Adcock turned to the social platform X to crowdsource ideas for a send-off. Among the replies was one from actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wrote, "You should melt them."
