Jagex has announced a fourth RuneScape massively multiplayer online game, currently carrying the working title RS4, at RuneFest 2026. According to TechPowerUp, many players are already referring to it as RuneScape 4. It marks the first numbered follow-up in the series since RuneScape 3 launched in 2013.
The game is being developed in Unreal Engine, though Jagex has not specified which version. The studio says RS4 is in early development with a dedicated team and remains a few years away. Jagex has also not discussed which platforms it will target.
A CGI teaser shown at the event featured a town set in a green valley, floating islands, and a dragon rider under attack from a three-headed dragon.
TechPowerUp reported that RS4 did not originate as a standalone game. It began as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex's Unreal Engine 5 survival title, and grew into its own project after playtesters requested a more traditional MMO take on that setting. The expansion was reportedly planned for 2027. The story is said to begin years after the events of Dragonwilds, in the same region, Ashenfall.
