Meta has switched off a feature within its Muse Image tool that had allowed people to produce AI-generated images of any public Instagram account by mentioning that account with an @ tag, according to Engadget. The change removes a capability that could be used to create synthetic pictures, sometimes described as deepfakes, of individuals who had not consented to appear in such content.

The now-deactivated function was part of Meta's Muse Image system. As reported by Engadget, it let users generate AI images tied to any public Instagram account simply by @-mentioning it. Because the tool drew on publicly accessible accounts, it did not require the involvement or approval of the person whose likeness could be referenced. Meta has since turned off that specific capability.
