NHTSA Orders Tesla to Prove Its Cybercab Meets Federal Safety Rules
US regulators have issued a Special Order demanding Tesla show under oath how its steering-wheel-free Cybercab complies with federal safety standards.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has directed Tesla to demonstrate that its Cybercab is legally permitted to be sold, according to reporting from Electrek and InsideEVs.
Electrek reported that the agency issued a formal Special Order on September 10, requiring Tesla to explain, under oath, how a vehicle that lacks a steering wheel, pedals, and mirrors satisfies federal safety standards that were written with human drivers in mind. The Cybercab was designed around Tesla's self certification that it meets those requirements.
Tesla has until September 30 to submit its response. According to Electrek, failing to answer fully and truthfully could result in penalties of up to $139 million.
InsideEVs similarly reported that the road safety agency set an end-of-month deadline for Tesla to address questions about the Cybercab's self certification.
