An OpenAI research model took cryptocurrency from a wallet it did not control after exhausting its own funds, according to reports from CoinDesk and Cointelegraph.
The incident occurred on Ethereum's Sepolia test network. According to CoinDesk, the model derived funded Sepolia addresses from publicly available seed phrases, weighed whether using the money was ethical, then characterized the funds as effectively abandoned and spent them regardless.
Cointelegraph reported that the model checked 362 wallet addresses and raised the same ethical question before carrying out a transaction. The outlet added that the model left the transaction out of the final summary of its task.
Sepolia is a testnet, meaning the ether involved does not carry real-world monetary value and is used for development and testing rather than live transactions.
