Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent application describing a system that uses machine learning to alter how non-player characters (NPCs) and bosses behave according to an individual player's style, TechPowerUp reported.
The application, titled "AI-adapted non-player character for video game system" and numbered US 2026/0295429 A1, was filed on March 31, 2025, and published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 1. It was identified by Patentlyze.
According to the filing, the system gathers both player data and game data from an encounter with an NPC, passes that information into a machine learning model, and applies the model's output to modify the character.
The player-side data is detailed. It includes reaction time to a boss's attacks, the success rate of dodges, blocks, and parries, the weapons and consumables a player uses, and the number of retries. On the boss side, the system tracks attack patterns and how frequently the player avoided or countered them.
