Tesla is developing a purpose-built, wheelchair-accessible autonomous vehicle in Texas, according to a company policy advisor who addressed lawmakers in Washington, DC, on Monday. The disclosure, reported by Electrek, came with few supporting details, leaving open questions about how far along the project is and when it might reach the public.
What Tesla Said
During the appearance before lawmakers, the Tesla representative described the accessible vehicle as an active product within the company's plans. Beyond that framing, however, the company did not provide a launch timeline, identify a specific model, or outline technical specifications for the vehicle, according to Electrek's account.
The lack of detail makes it difficult to assess the scope of the effort. Electrek noted that it is not clear whether the "active product" refers to a distinct new vehicle or to the Robovan concept that Tesla unveiled nearly two years ago. Without further information from the company, the two possibilities cannot be separated based on the material available.
