The steep price of running AI models has become a recurring complaint for companies building on the technology. Together AI's pitch is a dedicated cloud layer where developers can train and deploy open-source models while cutting costs. The company says moving workloads onto its platform can lower inference expenses considerably, and Ventureburn reported that one customer saw a sixfold drop in spending.

That cost argument is central to the company's growth story. For businesses in markets where cloud budgets are tight, the promise of running high-performance models without the bills attached to closed ecosystems is a meaningful draw. Together AI frames its mission as making machine intelligence both abundant and inexpensive rather than reserved for the largest technology firms.

Enterprise Demand for Open Models

Open-source AI has moved from a developer curiosity to a mainstream enterprise strategy. Ventureburn reported that industry usage of open-source models has tripled over the past year, driven by companies that want to customize systems without being locked into a single vendor.

Together AI says it is riding that momentum. The company disclosed that its annual bookings recently passed $1.15 billion and that it now serves thousands of paying corporate customers, many of them shifting away from closed setups. The trend reflects a broader rebalancing in the AI industry, where decentralized and open ecosystems are narrowing the capability gap with proprietary platforms.

Scaling the Hardware Footprint

Running a heavy-duty AI cloud requires physical infrastructure, and Together AI plans to use the new funding to expand its hardware base and add product features. Chief executive Vipul Ved Prakash said the company has secured commitments for more than 500 megawatts of dedicated compute capacity, according to Ventureburn. That capacity will be funded separately by strategic investors, a structure intended to keep pace with rising enterprise demand.

For the Africa–Europe technology corridor, the direction of travel matters. As open-source infrastructure becomes cheaper and more widely available, developers outside the traditional Silicon Valley orbit gain more room to build and deploy competitive AI tools without shouldering the full cost of proprietary systems.
