Comcast has introduced a home security feature that turns Xfinity routers into motion detectors, part of a new platform the company calls Xfinity Shield.
The feature, named Wi-Fi Motion, works by monitoring the strength of the wireless signal and interference between a router and the devices connected to it. When a person moves through the coverage area, the resulting changes in those radio frequency signals can be detected, according to Tom's Hardware. If the system registers unauthorized activity, the router can send an alert to the user's phone.
According to BleepingComputer, the technology allows routers and wireless devices to identify people moving through a home without the use of cameras or dedicated motion sensors. Comcast describes Xfinity Shield as offering intelligent home protection, and Tom's Hardware reported that the company characterizes it as a first-of-its-kind capability.
