Worldwide PC shipments declined 20.1% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, falling to 62.7 million units, according to preliminary figures from IDC. That compares with 78.5 million units shipped in the same period a year earlier.
The drop marks the second consecutive quarterly decline, and a sharper one than the previous quarter. IDC now records Q2 as a 3.8% fall. Shipments also dropped 9.1% from the second quarter, despite the third quarter typically being larger.
IDC attributed the weakness to activity in the first half of the year, when vendors and channels built up inventory ahead of memory-related price increases. According to IDC, that pulled demand forward, leaving the second half with constrained supply, elevated prices and little remaining demand.
