A PC modder has shared a hardware workaround for the overheating 16-pin power connectors that have affected Nvidia's RTX 5090 graphics cards, according to reports from Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp.
Reddit user DallasGrave posted details of a modified MSI GeForce RTX 5090 fitted with two additional 8-pin PCIe power inputs working alongside the card's original 16-pin connector. As described on r/pcmasterrace, a small pickup PCB is soldered to the contacts of the 16-pin header and feeds a second board carrying the two 8-pin sockets. The result is a card that draws power through three cables in total, distributing the current load across more wires to reduce connector temperatures.
DallasGrave said each conductor now carries roughly 3 amps, and reported that the wires stayed below 40 degrees Celsius, including at the joint, during a 48-hour run at 550W. TechPowerUp noted these figures are the modder's own numbers, with further test data said to be on the way.
