South Africa's communications minister, Solly Malatsi, has responded to allegations concerning lobbying tied to satellite operator Starlink, according to a report by ITWeb. The minister said the company is among a number of low-Earth orbit (LEO) providers that the government has been in contact with as part of its wider efforts to reform information and communications technology (ICT) policy and attract investment.
Context for the Africa-Europe corridor
Satellite connectivity has become a focal point for policymakers across the continent seeking to expand internet access in areas underserved by traditional fixed and mobile infrastructure. LEO systems, which rely on constellations of satellites orbiting relatively close to Earth, are viewed by several governments as one route to closing coverage gaps.
