SK Hynix Reportedly Weighing US Memory Chip Production With Intel Ties

SK Hynix is reportedly in discussions with Intel about producing memory chips in the United States, according to TechCrunch. When contacted, SK Hynix said it had not finalized any plans or arrangements.

Separately, TechPowerUp reported that SK Hynix subsidiary Solidigm is planning to establish its first NAND Flash manufacturing facility in the United States. Solidigm currently runs its headquarters and research and development operations in the US, but all of its production takes place outside the country. According to the report, SK Hynix is looking at ways to broaden its manufacturing footprint globally to build supply chains that are more resilient to geopolitical disruption.

Solidigm was formed after SK Hynix acquired Intel's NAND Flash manufacturing business in 2021. Following that deal, the company kept its production in China rather than expanding abroad. It currently operates Fab 1 in Dalian, China, and has stepped up construction of a nearby Fab 2. That expansion is intended to raise output by 50% by 2027 to meet growing NAND Flash demand, and marks a return to expansion in mainland China after a four-year pause on the project, TechPowerUp reported.
