Apple is reportedly looking to acquire artificial intelligence chip specialists as it seeks additional computing power for its server infrastructure, according to Engadget. The company's current servers, which run on its M2 Ultra silicon, appear to be reaching the limits of what Apple needs to support its expanding AI ambitions.
What the Reporting Indicates
Engadget reported that Apple's existing M2 Ultra-powered servers no longer seem sufficient for the company's requirements, prompting it to search externally for greater processing capability. Rather than relying solely on scaling its in-house hardware, the reporting suggests Apple is evaluating companies that design AI-focused chips as a path to strengthening its capacity.
The M2 Ultra is among Apple's most powerful custom processors, built by combining two of the company's high-end chips into a single package. Its reported shortfall for server-side AI workloads points to the intense computational demands associated with running large-scale machine learning systems, which typically require specialized silicon optimized for such tasks.
