East African central bank governors have reaffirmed their aim of launching a single regional currency by 2031, even as economic, institutional, and political challenges continue to weigh on the timeline, according to BitKE.
The commitment came at the 29th Ordinary Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Monetary Affairs Committee, held in Kampala in July 2026. Governors agreed to speed up implementation of the East African Monetary Union (EAMU) roadmap, despite uneven progress among member states toward the economic conditions needed for monetary union.
