Support for Intel's Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) has appeared in Windows 11, according to TechPowerUp. The feature surfaced in Windows 11 insider build 29695, which includes a toggle that lets users enable APX for improved performance.
No consumer PCs can currently make use of APX. Intel plans to introduce the extension with its "Nova Lake" processors, which are expected to arrive in early 2027. Software work has been underway so that the related features are in place before the chips reach retail, and the presence of the toggle suggests Microsoft has readied APX optimizations across the operating system.
APX is an extension to the x86-64 instruction set architecture that adds registers and new capabilities aimed at boosting a range of workloads. It doubles the number of general-purpose registers in a CPU from 16 to 32 and provides optimization paths so compiled code can take advantage of the added capacity. According to TechPowerUp, Intel reports roughly 10% fewer instructions in compiled code using APX, even though individual instruction lengths are larger. The result is that executed tasks use fewer CPU cycles, freeing resources for additional work.
