Klarna, the Swedish financial services company widely known for its buy now, pay later (BNPL) offerings, has filed an application for a banking licence in the United States, according to reports from Finextra and Tech.eu. The move marks a significant step in the firm's expansion strategy in the American market and highlights how European fintechs continue to seek footholds across the Atlantic.
Why This Matters for European Fintech
The US banking sector has historically been difficult for European players to enter. Tech.eu reported that the market has proved a challenging one for firms from Europe, though the current environment under the Trump administration is viewed as more receptive to new entrants. Klarna, which is publicly listed in the United States, has been steadily building its presence there. According to Tech.eu, the company now counts more than 30 million customers in the US and offers services including a debit card.
