Organisations that broadcast and produce major sporting events are reassessing the role of sustainability in their operations, according to reporting from Sports Video Group (SVG Europe).
The outlet noted that recent competitions have unfolded under visible climate stress. The FIFA World Cup 2026 has included hydration breaks, Tour de France riders have dealt with the impact of wildfires in south-western France, and players and spectators at Wimbledon have contended with extreme heat in SW19. SVG Europe reported that large events are being pushed to adjust quickly to climate change.
According to the same source, this adaptation is happening alongside geopolitical uncertainty, difficult economic conditions, shifting regulation and demanding net zero goals. With companies under pressure to focus on commercial results and operational efficiency, SVG Europe raised the question of whether sustainability is slipping down the priority list for broadcasters and production companies.
