Refiant AI, a startup with roots in South Africa, has released a suite of large language models called Protea, positioning the company as a new entrant in the effort to build more efficient AI systems from the African continent. The launch, reported by TechCabal, signals growing product activity in the Africa–Europe technology corridor, particularly around research and investment ties that connect local founders with international backers.
What Protea Offers
According to the company, Protea can process as many as 10 million tokens within a single prompt, allowing the models to take in and retain substantially more information before producing a response. Refiant AI is offering the suite in three configurations, with context windows of one million, five million, and 10 million tokens.
