Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed legislation establishing the country's first comprehensive legal framework for cryptocurrencies, according to BitKE. The core provisions are scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026, and formalize oversight of exchanges, brokers, and other digital asset service providers.
Under the new rules, crypto trading must be carried out through entities licensed by the Bank of Russia. The law also maintains Russia's existing prohibition on using cryptocurrencies to pay for goods and services domestically.
