Starlink, the satellite internet arm of SpaceX, has introduced a new residential terminal, the V5, that is smaller and lighter than its predecessor while consuming considerably less power. The launch is likely to draw attention across markets in Africa and Europe, where satellite connectivity has become an increasingly important option for households and businesses in areas underserved by fixed broadband.
What the V5 changes
According to Tom's Hardware, the company announced the V5 on X, describing it as capable of reaching download speeds of more than 375 Mbps for uses such as streaming, video calls and gaming. The most notable shift is in hardware size and energy use rather than raw performance. The V5 dish weighs about 2.4 pounds (1.1 kg), a reduction of more than 50% compared with the Standard 4 unit used in most current home installations, which weighs roughly 6.4 pounds (2.9 kg).
